Nothing better to know and enjoy your destiny than those places full of history, culture, tradition and art. But what museums to visit if you go to Puerto Madryn? We tell you that there are several alternatives between the city and its surroundings. Don’t worry, here’s not one you’ll want to miss!

    1. EGIDIO FERUGLIO PALEONTOLOGICAL MUSEUM

Located in the city of Trelew in Chubut province, it’s an exhibition and scientific research center; a museum of natural history. Among its spaces are examples of flora and fauna through fossils of the Patagonia Argentina.

The permanent exhibition is a true journey to the past, starting in the first paleo men. It throws us millions of years back to take us to the “big explosion”, Big Bang. The tour finishes with a projection in the central module and a visit to the laboratories.

To give you a more accurate reference, we tell you that the sample is made through a “black box” that recreates the environments of the past while exhibiting the original fossils and replicas. The scenery is magical, not for nothing is one of the children’s favorite museums! You can combine it with an excursion in the Lobería de Punta Tombo.

There are also traveling exhibitions. If it is about areas, the most visited are: La Cueva de Las Manos, El Feroz Fororraco (predator of the continental Tertiary), Tyrannotitan (a giant carnivorous dinosaur), and Patagotitan where you will see the fossils of the largest dinosaur in the world!

That said, it’s appropriate that you know that the place has a Dinoshop where you can buy gifts and souvenirs. There’s also the Feruglio Café where breakfast, lunch and snacks are offered. Amenities include satellite TV and free Wi-Fi. The entrance to this space is free.

As for the schedule, this museum is open daily from 09:00 hrs to 19:00 hrs (until 18:00 hrs in the months of March and early September). Saturdays, Sundays and holidays open from 10:00 hrs. However, you should know that it is closed until further notice by the pandemic triggered after the Covid-19 outbreak. The museum is located on Fontana 140 Avenue.

    2. ECOCENTER

You’re going to love it! This cultural space of Puerto Madryn was built right in front of the sea, its main objective being –precisely– to relate to this wonderful gift of nature.

To do this, it combines art, education and science. The goal is to show us the sea as sustainment to the biodiversity of birds and marine mammals of the Patagonian region, the sea that makes up these coasts until creating the dynamic environment of the coasts with their fish and invertebrates and the sea as an indisputable presence.

The place is equipped for diverse activities: exhibitions, information research, works of art, education and scientific dissemination. The inhabitants decide what to see and the time spent in each area, since it isn’t limited.

The Ecocentro is open all year round, hosting both permanent and temporary exhibitions and also art exhibitions. Whatever you want to see, it’s suitable for all ages. However, you should know that schedules vary based on the season. You can check the schedule on the Museum’s website. It is located at Julio Verne 3784.

    3. PROVINCIAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL AND OCEANOGRAPHIC SCIENCES

In the heart of the city of Puerto Madryn is settled this museum whose purpose is to preserve and disseminate the riches of the marine ecosystem. It operates in Chalet Pujol, an old building that retains its architectural value, offering us different rooms for a tour of the history of the province of Chubut.

In short, you will be able to know important facts about Welsh immigration and the ecological diversity of this region, as well as botany and geology, emphasizing the steppe and Patagonian coast. Besides this, there is a room of invertebrate fish, birds, marine mammals and cetaceans as a fundamental part of the sea coast that delimits the east bank of Madryn.

Once you know about the local communities –their ancestral practices and their ways of life– and the fauna with embalmed animals, the tour culminates in a viewpoint of the enclosure that gives us a splendid view with a panorama of the city and the New Gulf.

Please note that the opening hours of this museum are Monday to Friday from 10:00 hrs to 16:00 hrs and Saturdays and holidays from 15:00 hrs to 19:00 hrs. However, you should know that under the pandemic that we’re going through as a product of Covid-19, this place is temporarily closed. You can find it in José Menéndez 200. It’s one of the recommended museums to visit in Puerto Madryn, perfect to combine with one of the best excursions offered by this destination.

    4. ISTMO AMEGHINO INTERPRETATION CENTRE

In the isthmus of the same name, within the Valdés Peninsula, is this Interpretation Center that presents us –in depth– the life of the marine and terrestrial fauna of the Patagonia Argentina: sea elephants, one-haired wolves, orcas, right whales, dolphins, guanacos, ñandúes, maras, piches, mountain cats, red and grey foxes, penguins, white-breasted cormorants, southern gulls and gulls, calandrias and chingolos.

Simply put, you will know the characteristics of the biodiversity of the place and the interrelationship that exists between these species, geography and man. All this, through its teaching rooms. Indeed, it will be a fun learning.

There is a zoning plan with freely accessible areas for visitors that will have eye contact with marine protected species. Meanwhile, through a narrow sector, you climb a tower from where you can see the New Gulf to the south and the San Jose Gulf to the north. The view is majestic and unprecedented, birds get lost among the blue of the sea.

In compliance with the health and preventive measures decreed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Istmo Ameghino Interpretation Centre is temporarily closed.

You know which museums to visit if you go to Puerto Madryn. As you will see, they are full of history and culture, their main attraction being the fascinating fauna of this city of the Patagonian Region. The best thing is that, besides learning, they work as a perfect complement to a day of excursions.

Consult with our travel specialists, they will provide you with the help you need to assemble your travel itinerary. E.g., the Egidio Feruglio Paleontological Museum can be perfectly combined with the Chubut River Valley tour, including a shuttle service for the day of arrival or one-way, depending on your choice.
