    Documentation to travel to Iguazu

The documentation to travel to Iguazu depends on each traveler. If you go alone, with children or if you’re driving. The Falls are shared with Brazil.

    21 de January, 2021

Iguazu is home to one of the “Seven Wonders of the World”. Not for nothing is one of the main tourist destinations in Argentina. However, it’s known that the Falls are shared with Brazil. Because of this, documentation is required to travel to Iguazu… You have to cross the border! It’s impossible to travel to this place and visit only the Argentine side. Every stretch of Iguazu Falls has its particular charm, so much that the tour is quite different from the Brazilian side. Therefore, what is the documentation required for traveling to Iguazu?

The first thing to consider is that the requirements for entering this place in the province of Misiones, depend directly on the type of traveler. That is, if you are an adult or a minor and if you are traveling on your own through a private car. Also if you are an Argentine resident, Brazilian resident or from one of the Mercosur countries.

Simply put, it’s important from wherever way you look at! Pay special attention to the identification we carry.

DOCUMENTATION FOR ADULTS TRAVELING TO IGUAZU

The documentation required for adults does not vary much with respect to the documentation they need to carry for other domestic trips within Argentina.

If you are an Argentine resident, simply bring the ID that says Mercosur. We make this clarification because THEDs or Old Documents are not accepted to cross into Brazil. When we talk about old ID we mean: green notebook, enlistment notebook, civic notebook, etc.

On the other hand, those who are not Argentinian residents but are from any other Mercosur country can also carry their own country’s valid National Identity Document as long as it clarifies that it belongs to Mercosur.

In addition to DNI’s, a valid option is to carry a passport with 6 months of validity from the end of the trip. That is, it cannot be near the expiration date. All adults who do not have Argentinian ID or Mercosur passport must travel with a passport and it’s appropriate to investigate whether –based on their country of origin– Brazil asks them for some type of visa.

Some countries that do need a visa are Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, China and Russia. Under no circumstances may the documentation they submit be expired or outside the established time limits.

DOCUMENTS FOR CHILDREN TRAVELLING TO IGUAZU

In case of minors with residence in Argentina, it’s enough with the ID or passport; reiterating that it’s a new one and says Mercosur. However, there is a fundamental requirement and it’s the birth certificate or family notebook on which it’s recorded that you are traveling with both parents.

The birth certificate has to be original and it cannot be plasticized; it is appropriate to clarify that this document is exempted only in case of children with ID who –at the back– specify the parents’ names.

If the minor is travelling only with one of his parents, it’s required (in addition to the original ID, passport, birth certificate or family book), to attach a parental or maternal figure permit (depending on who is absent), certified by public scribe.

The same goes for minors who are not Argentinian residents. However, if they belong to Mercosur, they must present the documentation proving to their country of origin as a member (birth certificate or family book and authorization if they warrant it).

If the child is not a resident of Mercosur, then he/she will have to carry the same documentation but replacing the ID with his/her passport. They also have to keep in mind that Brazil may require visas as well as adults, depending on the country of origin.

All documentation must be in effect. For more details on this and other topics on travel with minors, you can consult our article on recommendations for a holiday with children in Iguazu

REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTERING IGUAZU WITH VEHICLES

Those planning to travel with their own vehicle also have to take into account that at the border they will be required to provide documentation showing the legal possession of said car; including the ID or passport proving the identity of the traveler and, of course, the driving license fully valid. Similarly, you will need to enter proof of insurance payment and green card even if you are counting on the blue card. Insurance must cover the civil liability of the owner and/or driver of the vehicle (green letter). Check out our article on how to get to Puerto Iguazu.
